Since February is the month during which our culture celebrates “love,” we decided to take the month to talk about what “love” really is according to the Bible. We started out the first couple of weeks looking at love through the lens of the book of Ruth. This past week, we finished up by looking at the life of Jesus.
Over the three weeks, we looked at three very important aspects of love: love sacrifices, love protects, and love serves. The very essence of love is selflessness. It is putting others above yourselves. Obviously, Jesus was the greatest demonstration of love when he gave up his position in heaven to come to earth so that he could die as a sacrifice for our sins (see Philippians 2:5-11).
Robert McQuilkin is no Jesus, but he also gives us a pretty good look at what it means to love. McQuilkin was faced with a tough decision as the President of Columbia Bible College and Seminary. His wife was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease and needed constant attention. Watch the following video (grab a tissue first) to see the decision that McQuilkin had to–I mean got to–make.
